Chelsea New Boy Named Ajax Player Of The Year Third Time In A Row

The Morocco international capped his impressive stay at Amsterdam with another award before his summer switch to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea’s latest signing Hakim Ziyech has been named Ajax Player of the Year for the third time in a row.

The Morocco playmaker was outstanding in Erik ten Hag’s side with a contribution of nine goals and 18 assists across all competitions this season before the Dutch Eredivisie was annulled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ziyech joined Ajax from league rivals Twente in 2016 and during his four-year spell at the club, he won the Player of the Year award thrice – the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Ahead of his €40 move to Chelsea in July, he provided 49 goals and 71 assists in the last four seasons at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Ajax were at the top of the table before the Eredivisie was initially suspended, ahead of AZ Alkmaar only on goal difference, but they were denied the title after the Dutch Football Federation declared the 2019-20 campaign void with no winner or relegations.

“That would have been my closing in style. As it is now, you do not want it to end. But over a longer period of time, I will cherish my best memories,” Ziyech said in reaction to the development.

“And then, of course, that brings up last season. The championship, but especially our journey in the Champions League, how we amazed the whole world with our game. It all fit.

“That not only gives me a special feeling for all the players, but I think it will last forever. We left something at Ajax. And for me, it is now time for something new.”

Ziyech’s move to Chelsea in July would be his first adventure outside the Netherlands having previously played for Heerenveen, Twente in the Dutch top-flight since his professional career started in 2012.

The 27-year-old claimed the Blues’ style of play convinced him to agree to a five-year deal with Frank Lampard’s side who are fourth in the Premier League this season.

“Happy, proud, I am excited and I cannot wait. They (Chelsea) are a big club in a big competition,” he said.

“I like the style of play, they play really attacking football, and that is something that fits me and that is one of the biggest reasons I chose [them].”

Stop revealing details of drugs used for your treatment- FG warns COVID-19 survivors

The Federal Government on Friday, May 15, pleaded with COVID-19 survivors to stop giving details of the drugs used for their treatment to discourage self-medication.
The Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha, made the plea at a press briefing in Abuja, following recent video testimonies of some high profile survivors, talking about the drugs administered on them at the treatment centres.Stop revealing details of drugs used for your treatment- FG warns COVID-19 survivors
Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed concern that some of the testimonies disclosing the prescription for treatment of the virus could encourage patients to indulge in self-medication instead of seeking help from health authorities.
He urged all Nigerians that have symptoms of COVID-19 to test for the virus and, if positive, go into the isolation centres for care by experts.
Mustapha said: "The PTF congratulates and appreciates the testimonies of Nigerians who have recovered from COVID-19, which has given us more insights and further strengthens the need to adhere strictly to guidelines issued.
"However, an emerging issue from all these testimonies is the issue of prescription for treatments. We should always remember that the symptoms of COVID-19 mimic some illnesses we already know but treating the symptoms is not the same as treating the virus. For this reason, we strongly discourage self-medication."
He also said that five states in Nigeria were currently participating in the on-going World Health Organization (WHO)-coordinated solidarity trial to find a cure for the pandemic, saying that at the end of this trial, relevant health authorities would make statements on acceptable drugs for treating COVID-19.

Nigeria Didn’t Ask Madagascar For Cure, They Gave Us – FG

Federal Government said yesterday it did not beg Madagascar to supply its COVID-19 syrup to Nigeria, explaining that the country donated the elixir which was accepted in the spirit of African brotherhood.
The government also announced that it has put in place measures to rethink its National Response to COVID-19, saying emerging developments indicated there was a need for a change in tactics.

Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha, dismissed speculations that Nigeria might have asked Madagascar for the supply of its COVID-19 organic, instead of promoting local researchers for a cure.

He said:-
“The issue of Madagascar. Let me explain that Nigeria did not ask Madagascar for any solution. That has to be very clear because I have seen some narratives out there giving credence to a line of the story.

”That, for me, is only distractive. Nigeria did not ask.

The Madagascan government decided to airlift quantities meant for African countries and so that of West Africa was airlifted to Guinea-Bissau. So, all the members of ECOWAS have their commodities off-loaded in Guinea-Bissau and that was the one I referred to, that we were making arrangements to evacuate.

”But the impression out there was as if we abandoned homegrown solutions and we're looking for Madagascan solution. We did not ask for it, but it was taken in the spirit of brotherly love, or African brotherly love.

”We have asked our ambassador there to establish the location, the quantity, etc. He has done that. We have to make an arrangement for its freighting out of Guinea-Bissau. There are no flights, so there are so many things we have to consider.

Law enforcement disclosed that the men made out with more than $7,000 in cash -- along with several valuable watches including an $18,000 Rolex watch, a $25,000 Hublot, and a pricey Audemars Piguet timepiece.

Tania Rues, a spokeswoman for the Miramar police, said Thursday night that the two players had not been arrested and that the police were in contact with the N.F.L. and a lawyer who is representing one of the players.
“Obviously, there are attempts to get them to turn themselves in,” she said.

Recovered looted funds: Governors to engage FG to recognise states in distribution of proceeds
The governors, in a communiqué issued at the end of the NGF’s 8th teleconference meeting chaired by Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, expressed concerns over Federal Government’s dominant role in terms of ownership and distribution of proceeds from recovered looted funds and accounts or investments funded as the first-line charge from the Federation Account.

To this end, the subnational governments unanimously agreed to engage with the Federal Government with the view to ensure that the governance arrangement of all federation-funded investments recognizes state governments as shareholders in the distribution of proceeds and decision making.

The communiqué signed by Governor Fayemi reads: “We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at our meeting held today deliberated on the COVID-19 pandemic in the country and resolved as follows:

"The NGF Chairman briefed state governors on existing coordination activities with the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19, multilateral and bilateral partners, and the private sector through the coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID).

"In addition to ongoing activities aimed at strengthening the public health response and the delivery of palliatives to vulnerable persons, the Forum is coordinating an additional response with the support of the Dangote Foundation to set up a volunteer workforce of health personnel who will be trained and deployed to strengthen the availability of health workers in States in critical need.

"The Forum is concerned with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country which reached 4,787 as at 12th May 2020 based on an update from the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19.

"The worrying trend urgently calls for additional measures by state governors to ramp up capacity for testing, increase the availability of isolation beds to at least 300 per State, accelerate the procurement of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) and training for health workers, as well as the continued enforcement of interstate restriction of movement.

"In line with the commitment made by the Forum to intensify public-private collaboration for the delivery of palliatives from the private sector, governors are making warehouses available for the delivery of palliatives and have appointed state coordinators who will be responsible for the receipt and distribution of palliatives to vulnerable persons.

"Following an update from the governor of Sokoto State and Vice Chairman of the NGF, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on the proposed Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020 introduced by the House of Representatives, governors raised concern with the lack of consultation with state governments who are at the forefront of the epidemic.

"The Forum resolved that the Bill should be stepped down until an appropriate consultative process is held, including a public hearing to gather public opinion and concerns.

"In the light of this, the Forum established a Committee comprising the governors of Katsina, Sokoto and Plateau to lead a consultative meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on the proposed Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020.

"The NGF Secretariat was also mandated to comprehensively review the Bill and its implication on States.

"The Forum received a briefing from the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, on the Oil and Gas Industry Intervention Initiative on COVID-19, set up by oil and gas operators to provide medical consumables to states, deploy logistics and in-patient support systems, and deliver permanent medical infrastructure across the six geopolitical zones.

"Governors commended NNPC for leading the industry to take the initiative and advised the group to prioritise interventions that will boost the country’s testing capacity and the capacity of health workers who are at the frontline of the epidemic.

"Following an update from the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki on the operation of the World Bank States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) project which is supporting a strong pro-poor fiscal response to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, state governors agreed to take additional measures to strengthen their public financial management systems, including a revision of their 2020 budgets and the amendment of State procurement guidelines to support e-procurement and the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

"To fast-track the deployment of e-procurement across States, the forum will be adopting a Software as a Service (SaaS) model with the Kaduna State government providing the framework agreement that other states can leverage on.

"Following an update on the rising trend of deductions from revenues accruable to the federation account available for distribution to the three tiers of government, the governors noted the threat this poses on the fiscal capacity of States to respond to the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Members also raised concern about the ownership and distribution of proceeds from recovered looted funds and accounts or investments funded as the first-line charge from the federation account.

"The Forum agreed to engage with the Federal Government to ensure that the governance arrangement of all federation-funded investments recognises state governments as shareholders in the distribution of proceeds and decision making.

"The Forum has followed with interest, the development of the 12-month Economic Sustainability Plan by the federal government, which is designed to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

"In the spirit of developing a truly coordinated national response to the crisis, governors expressed the importance of greater consultation and collaboration between the Federal and State governments on development planning.

"A Committee was consequently set up to interface with the Federal Government on the next Medium-term National Development Plan.

"The Committee is made up of the governors of Bauchi, Plateau, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Ekiti.

"A 2nd Committee comprising the governors of Gombe, Nasarawa, Delta, Ebonyi, Oyo and Kaduna was established to steer the activities of the NGF-NESG Economic Roundtable (NNER) – a sub-national platform of the NGF and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group created to promote sub-national competitiveness through public-private collaboration.

"Finally, the Forum congratulated the newly appointed Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Ibrahim Gambari. The Forum wishes him well and looks forward to a fruitful partnership that will support the development of the country."

Churches And Mosques Asked To Reopen In Borno State

Churches and Mosques are now allowed to reopen in Borno state, as the ban on religious gatherings in the state has been relaxed.

While the ban on Eid prayers is still in force, churches and mosques have been asked to reopen and also to observe strict guidelines on maintaining physical distancing during service.

This was made known by Umar Kadafur, Borno state’s deputy governor and chairman of the state COVID-19 response committee, in a recently released statement.

According to him, the government would revert to the “status quo” if the COVID-19 situation escalates.

The statement read;

“Henceforth, Jumma’at prayers and five daily prayers shall be observed in all mosques as recommended by the Borno State Council of Ulamas in strict adherence with social distancing and the use of face masks.

“All churches shall conduct church services as recommended by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Borno Chapter in strict adherence with social distancing and use of face masks.

“Government has considered the recommendation of the Borno State Council of Ulamas which clearly states that Eid prayers is Sunnah (non obligatory), hence there should be no Eid prayers. Faithfuls should remain at home during the period.”

There is still a restriction on public gathering in Borno state as only 20 people are expected to gather for events such as funeral processions, weddings, naming ceremonies.
