Nigerian man, Kaycee Madu appointed Minister of Justice in Canada

A Nigerian man, Kaycee Madu has made history after being appointed a Minister of Justice in Alberta, Canada.

Premier Jason Kenney on Tuesday August 25, elevated Madu to the justice portfolio from Municipal Affairs in a cabinet shuffle that saw Calgary-Elbow MLA Doug Schweitzer move from justice to an economic portfolio.

With the appointment, Madu is now the first Black Canadian to occupy either provincial or federal justice positions of the justice minister, attorney general or solicitor general.

Kenney said;

“This effectively takes the Economic Development, Trade and Tourism portfolio (and) renames it. Additional functions will be added to the ministry over the weeks and months that come.

“This is a broadened and expanded ministry. Alberta is being hit especially hard with the double whammy of the global coronavirus recession, on top of that the collapse of energy prices which has clobbered our largest industry — oil and gas."

Madu on his own part tweeted;

Thank you, everyone, for all the well wishes. I am beyond humbled to accept my new role as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General - where I will pursue fairness, equality, and justice for all with every ounce of strength I have.

Madu, who has practised law in both Nigeria and Alberta, was first elected as an MLA in the April 2019 general election.

Mompha regains his freedom, drops N5m suit against EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC today August 26, release internet celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha alias Mompha, about two weeks after he was re-arrested by the anti-graft agency in Lagos.

LIB had earlier reported that Mompha was re-arrested on Friday, August 14 when he went to the EFCC office in Ikoyi, Lagos to reclaim his five wristwatches, one Apple Air pod, one iPhone 8 mobile phone and one pair of sunglasses, seized by the EFCC operatives last October. Following an application by his lawyer, Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), Justice Mohammed Liman had on July 24 ordered the EFCC to release the items to Mompha.

Mompha had gone to the EFCC to pick up his item and had barely left the EFCC premises when the operatives accosted him and took him into custody. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said Mompha’s re-arrest was connected to a fresh set of cyber fraud charges.

Confirming his release, his lawyer, Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), said Mompha has also withdrawn the N5 million fundamental rights suit he filed against the EFCC to challenge his re-arrest.

Boko Haram killed 75 Borno elders in one night - Senator Ali Ndume

Boko Haram killed 75 Borno elders in one night - Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has narrated how 75 elders in his community in Gwoza local government were slaughtered in one night by Boko Haram insurgents.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by Senate Committee on Special Duties and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in Maiduguri on Wednesday August 26, the Senator representing Borno South said the challenges faced by the people of Borno State is being underreported.

Senator Ndume averred that he can't go back to his hometown in Gwoza even as a Senator because it is not safe. He also recalled how Boko Haram members had in a single day lined up young men in same Gwoza, and summarily shot them dead.

He said;

“If the Senate Committee would take time during their stay to go round some of the camps and even the nearby Konduga local government, we would all better appreciate what the people are facing.

“Even as a serving senator, I still cannot go to Gwoza my home town because it is not safe.

“Our security operatives are trying their bests, and we have to give it to them. But the situation is overwhelming. People are dying every day, either from attacks or by hunger. We have lost many lives here.

“There was a time in my home town Gwoza, that about 75 elders most of whom I know personally were dragged by Boko Haram to the town’s abattoir and slaughtered like animals. Only two persons survived because their bodies were covered with other people’s’ blood and the assailants thought they were dead.

“In the same Gwoza, Boko Haram had in a single day lined up young men and summarily shot them dead. These were just some stand out cases.”

Ndume also noted that the issue of hunger in Borno state would have been worse if there were no non-governmental organisations. He added that many other cases of insecurity pushed him to realise the need for the Northeast region to have a Development Commission.

He said;

“We don’t know where we would have been or what would have happened to us in Borno State, had there not been the NGOs.

“People die every day here, and I can assure you that even today or this evening, someone may have died of hunger. I am not talking about children – I mean adults.

“NEDC was my idea, and I pushed for its formation, not for anything else but to see how our people could be helped out of this ugly situation. And so far, we are impressed with the kind of work they are dong.

“But sadly, the amount of money at the disposal of the commission is not adequate to solve the humanitarian challenges facing Borno state alone."

Poor Nigerians won’t be affected by tariff increase - NERC

Poor Nigerians won?t be affected by tariff increase - NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has made a clarification on the planned increase of electricity tariff across the country.

NERC Chairman, James Momoh in a statement released on Wednesday August 26 after President Buhari approved the implementation of the proposed cost-reflective energy tariff for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) on Tuesday August 25, said the new tariff regime will exempt vulnerable customers consuming 50KW or less.

He added that customers on estimated billing will not also be affected as the president has ordered mass metering of consumers across the country.

The statement read;

“NERC wishes to clarify that tariff reviews going forward will only follow service-based principles. Under these service-based principles DisCos will only be able to review tariff rates for customers when they consult with customers, commit to increasing the number of hours of supply per day and quality of service.

“In all cases poor and vulnerable Nigerians will not experience any increase. In line with these expectations, DisCos are directed to engage with their customers on a Service Based Tariff structure. Under the Service Based Tariff Structure, DisCos can only review tariffs for customers under the following conditions.

“Customers are consulted and communicated a guaranteed level of electricity service by the DISCOs based on hours of supply; customers are metered; no estimated billing through the strict enforcement of the capping regulation.

“This means that unmetered customers will not experience any cost increase beyond what is chargeable to metered customers in the same area. Even under the above conditions, there will be no change in tariff for the most vulnerable as tariffs for those consuming 50KW or less remain frozen.

“Customers receiving less than 12 hours of supply will also not experience any change in tariffs. In addition, the President has directed that there should be a nationwide mass-metering program in an effort by the Federal Government to put a stop to estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity.”

Cop who shot Jacob Blake in the back is identified as more details from the case are released

The Wisconsin cop who shot Jacob black in the back seven times has been identified as officer Rusten Sheskey, as more details from the case have emerged.

The shooting, which occurred on Sunday, August 23, is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

An initial account of Sunday's incident fingers Sheskey as the trigger man.

According to the Department of Justice, Kenosha Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence after a female caller reported her boyfriend was there when he was not supposed to be.

During the incident, the DOJ says police attempted to arrest Jacob and used a taser to try and stop him, but it didn't work.

Instead, Jacob walked around his vehicle, opened the driver's side door and leaned forward as Officer Sheskey held onto his shirt and fired 7 shots into his back.

The shooting left Jacob paralyzed from the waist down and his family said he will need a miracle to walk again.

The DOJ says Jacob Blake said he had a knife in his possession. DCI agents recovered a knife from the driver's side floorboard in Blake's car. The DOJ says no other weapons were found in Jacob's car.

The state says the DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine facts and will turn over its investigative report to a prosecutor once complete.
