The suspect was prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a six-count amended charge of obtaining money by false pretense, after the anti-graft agency received a petition from one Nduka Lucious in which he alleged that the convict collected the sum of $22,300 from him in three installments on the agreement that he would supply 100 metric tonnes of sesame seed to one Victoria Xhung, a China-based Taiwanese businesswoman whom the petitioner represents in Nigeria.

Oluokun reportedly failed to deliver the product as promised and converted the sum to his personal use.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gombe zonal office, has secured the conviction of Samuel Bulus Adamu before Justice N. I . Afolabi of Federal High Court Gombe.
Ex-Local government chairman in Gombe bags 31 years in jail for N97m fraud
A statement from the antigraft agency says Adamu, a former Chairman of Shongom Local Government Area of Gombe State, was first arraigned on March 9, 2015 on a seven-count charge bordering on fraud, cheating and money laundering to the tune of N97, 640, 000.00k( Ninety-Seven Million, Six Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira only).

When the charges were read to him, he pleaded "not guilty" to them, thus prompting the EFCC to prosecute him for more than five years.

During the trial, prosecution counsels, A. M. Labaran and A. Y Muntaka called four witnesses and tendered several exhibits, in order to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In its judgment delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2020, Justice Afolabi found Adamu guilty of all the seven- count charges. He convicted and sentenced him to five years imprisonment on counts 1, 2 and 4 without an option of fine. On count 3, the court sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine and on counts 5, 6 and 7, the court sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment each without an option of fine. The sentence is to commence from July 10, 2020, and run concurrently.

"I want my peace," Seyitan Babatayo says as she releases statement after dismissing her petition against D'banj

Seyitan Babatayo has released a statement after it was revealed that she has dismissed her petition against singer D'banj after accusing him of rape.
"I want my peace," Seyitan Babatayo says as she releases statement after dismissing her petition against D
Her statement is a reaction to a statement released by the human rights group, Stand To End Rape Initiative  (STER), that has been trying to get justice for her.

In a statement released after Seyitan dismissed her petition, STER accused activist Segun Awosanya, aka Segalink of attempting to "pervert justice" in the case between Seyitan Babatayo and D’banj (read here).

STER claimed in the statement that Segalink texted an address to Seyitan and asked her to attend a meeting with D’banj there. STER said the meeting was aimed at negotiating a private settlement and Seyitan's legal counsel was also scheduled to be in attendance.

The NGO said that they were also invited to the meeting but declined because "out-of-court settlements go against STER’s policy."

STER said that "such settlements, in our experience, often involve an asymmetry of power between the accused and victim."

They added in the statement: "More importantly, while private settlements are usual in civil disputes, they are, however, not applicable to criminal cases, particularly where a felony has been alleged to have been committed, only the State has the authority to discontinue a criminal investigation and prosecution.

"An attempt by any private individual(s) to circumvent the authority of the State in criminal investigations may amount to a conspiracy and attempt to pervert justice."

Segalink reacted, stating that Seyitan and her family were not interested in pursuing the case or a legal battle.

Segalink said: "Seyi and her family are not interested in any CASE or legal battle… before the involvement of STER or police."

Reacting to STER's statement, Seyitan cleared Segalink of trying to pervert justice. She said it was her family that tried to reach a settlement so they reached out to Segalink.

She wrote: "It was my family members and I that did resolve to and subsequently contacted @Segalink to facilitate a meeting with D-banj's team for a resolution of the issue and as I did not intend to continue with this contention."

She made other points in her statement and ended with: "I really want my PEACE. Thank you."

'He is extraordinary'- Juventus coach Sarri heaps praise on Cristiano Ronaldo after he becomes quickest player to score 50 Serie A goals

Juventus manager, Maurizio Sarri has hailed superstar footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo after the footballer broke another record by becoming the quickest player to reach 50 goals in Serie A.

The Portuguese scored twice within three minutes against Lazio to help his club's quest to clinch the Serie A after he converted a penalty and then scored from a swift counter attack following a pass from Paulo Dybala in the 2-1 victory.

The brace took him to 51 Serie A goals in total but he became the quickest to reach half a century, doing so in just 61 league games.

Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko previously held the record by getting to 50 goals in 68 games, while Brazilian Ronaldo reached the 50 mark in 70 appearances.

Sarri praising Ronaldo, said;
“When Cristiano smells blood… He’s extraordinary, as he recovers so quickly between games,’ Sarri said to Sky Sport Italia.
“It’s not just physical, but psychological.
“He could be someone who uses up so much energy in each game, but he recovers it every time and he’s world class in the mind as well as the legs.”

Ronaldo also became the first player to score at least 50 goals in the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A.

His 51 goals in Italy go alongside his 84 in the English Premier League, and 311 in LaLiga make Ronaldo's feats look supernatural. The star player, however, played down his achievements.
“Records are always important, but the most important thing is that the team wins,” Ronaldo said.
“We are a phenomenal team and we showed that again today, although we always want to improve and raise the bar.”

Woman allegedly defrauds victims of N179m then spends N1m on tithe and N139m on sport betting

Woman allegedly defrauds victims of N179m then spends N1m on tithe and N139m on sport betting
A woman, Nkechi Mercy Ikogwe alongside two companies, Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited, was on Monday, July 20, arraigned before Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, over alleged N179 million fraud.

EFCC arraigned them on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

The woman was said to have used the sum of N139,704,097 of the N179 million to play sport betting and also paid a tithe of N1 million to a church in Port Harcourt.

One of the counts against the defendants read: “That you Nkechi Mercy Ikogwe, Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited sometime in 2019 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N179,326,386.62 by inducing unsuspecting members of the public to invest with your companies: Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited, assuring them under a false pretence of making 15% interest on all investment made, a representation you knew to be false, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

Justice Obile ordered that the 1st defendant, Ikogwe, be remanded in prosecution’s custody and adjourned the matter till October 19, 2020, for determination of the bail application.

Mercy ran into trouble when the commission received a report about the defendant and two others, accusing them of inducing their victims into participating in a fraudulent investment scheme with a fake promise of 15 per cent return on investment.

Keyamo won’t handle recruitment for 774,000 jobs - National Assembly insists

Keyamo won?t handle recruitment for 774,000 jobs - National Assembly insists
The national assembly has insisted that the minister of state for labour and employment, Festus Keyamo won't be handling the recruitment of 774,000 citizens under a special works programme.

The resolution was reached in the senate and the house of representatives following motions passed in both chambers.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele who moved a motion in the red chamber, stated that the ministry of labour will take up a supervisory role while the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) will handle the recruitment.

Bamidele said;

“The senate hereby reiterates its support of the initiative of Mr President aimed at creating additional 774,000 temporary jobs for Nigerians.
“There is the need to go ahead and cooperate with the executive arm of government under Mr President’s watch to ensure the smooth and full implementation of the programme as provided for in the revised appropriation law passed by the national assembly.
“That while recognising the supervisory role of the ministry labour and employment, the senate notes that the need for it in its oversight and further legislative actions in respect of this programme the need to hold the NDE responsible both for the implementation of the programme and surrendering of accounts for monies appropriated by the programme by the national assembly.”

Hon Toby Okechukwu who also moved a motion in the lower chamber, affirmed that section 2 of NDE act vests the agency with the responsibility to “combat” mass unemployment. He added that the attitude of the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo could jeopardize the capacity of the national assembly to oversight MDAs.

He said;

“The supervisory powers conferred on the minister of labour by section 15 of the NDE act do not condone any abnormalities or allow the minister to do so without regards to the law.
“Aware that by our laws as presently constituted, the NDE is an implementing agency with the minister of labour, not minister of state, an aberration and indeed an entity unknown to the law, is the supervising minister.
“Mindful that the term ‘minister of state’ is not a creation of section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution.
“This may therefore be the reason for the refusal of the minister of state to be guided on the method adopted by parliament for its proceedings and his assertion that ‘only Mr. President can stop our work’, not our laws nor our institutions.”

The motions were passed in both chambers after being subjected to a voice vote by Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house.

#NDDCgate: Remove Akpabio now- Professor Itse Sagay advises President Buhari
Professor Itse Sagay, the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council Against Corruption PACAC, has advised President Buhari to sack the Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry, Godswill Akpabio, following the startling revelations of financial recklessness in the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC at the House of Representatives investigative panel.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Sagay said
''If I were the President, if I were in his shoes, and if I was to advice him, I would say dissolve this interimcommittee, remove the Minister of the Niger Delta because he is neck deep in it and bring in fresh people, probably people who have been properly nominated and then institute a very strict system of monitoring expenditure''

On the House of Representatives decision to compel Akpabio to release the names of the lawmakers he said have benefitted from contracts from the commission, Sagay said

''I think it is a very healthy development. The suspicions have been strong for a long time that many lawmakers are not satisfied with their own and they want to do business with government and that they use their influence to acquire contracts in areas they are supposed to be providing supervisions  for.
The suspicion has been on for a very long time and some names have been mentioned in the past and they denied. So I think this is a very good opportunity for that issue to be finally settled.
Once the names are mentioned and spelt out, we would be able to conclude and know those who are comporimising their positions as legislators and getting their hands in areas in which they should be providing a cleansing for society but if it is false, they would have cleared their names and their honor and integrity would be restored''

Recovered vehicles were auctioned to Presidential Villa and ministries – Suspended EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu says

Recovered vehicles were auctioned to Presidential Villa and ministries ? Suspended EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu says
Ibrahim Magu, the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, has told the Justice Ayo Salami-led presidential panel investigating his activities as chairman of the antigraft commission, that some of the vehicles recovered from looters were auctioned to the Presidential Villa, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as the Federal Inland Revenue Services and other agencies.

Magu made this known in a letter he sent to the panel titled, ‘Re: Alleged Case of Conspiracy, Enrichment, Abuse of Public Office and Other Infractions,’.

Magu's letter was in response to an earlier report by the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets in which he was accused of being unable to account some of the recovered vehicles and houses as well as the interest on the N550 billion recovered funds.

Magu in his response letter, said about 450 vehicles that have been recovered are yet to be sold.

His letter in part reads
“On allocation of vehicles to some government agencies through special auction with presidential approval. The beneficiary agencies are: the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of which the valued price is to be debited from their allocation; State House, National Commission for Refugees and Displaced Persons; Federal Inland Revenue Service  and National Directorate of Employment.
The commission presently has presidential approval to dispose over 450 forfeited vehicles located in Lagos and Abuja. The vehicles have been valued by the National Automotive Council Valuers and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. But no sale/disposal has been conducted yet''

Responding to allegations that he has diverted some of the recovered houses from looters, Magu said the recovered houses have been handed over to some government agencies like the Voice of Nigeria, North -East Development Commission, and the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate. He added that some other properties, which had been forfeited pending the outcome of court cases, were being rented by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Nigerian Army and other agencies of government.

The embattled EFCC boss also informed the panel via his letter that the commission also temporarily handed over a property recovered in Lagos to the Lagos State Government for use as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients.

“Real properties finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria and allocated to some agencies for official use in line with the Presidential approval are: Voice of Nigeria,  National Directorate of Employment, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, North East Development Commission and Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.
“Properties under interim forfeiture order are rented by the following government agencies: Nigerian Army, Federal Ministry of Finance, Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
“Other agencies of government that have approached the commission to rent properties under interim forfeiture order include: National Human Rights Commission and National Council for Arts and culture.” his letter read

The panel however reportedly rejected Magu's letter which was submitted by his lawyer, Wale Shittu, insisting there was no basis for the letter and informed Shittu that Magu would be summoned if there was a need for clarification.

Magu was arrested by the police on July 6, 2020, and brought before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel which is sitting at the Presidential Villa. He was accused of corruption and diversion of recovered funds, insubordination and others by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

“The Presidency wishes to state that the problem of insecurity in Southern Kaduna State is more complicated than many people are willing to admit.
“From available records, Southern Kaduna enjoys comprehensive security deployments, including the Army, Special Forces of both the Army and the Air Force, surveillance aircraft by the Air Force and mobile police units that are on the ground on a 24-hour basis to forestall criminality and keep the peace.
“But unlike other parts of the country, the problem of Southern Kaduna is more complicated than many critics are ready to acknowledge and understand.
“From available security records, the problem in Southern Kaduna is an evil combination of politically-motivated banditry, revenge killings and mutual violence by criminal gangs acting on ethnic and religious grounds.
“It is a situation in which one criminal group will kill a member of another criminal group out of ethnic and religious motivations,  which in turn leads to the eruption of revenge and counter-revenge, thereby making the job of the security personnel deployed to protect lives more difficult,” he said.
“We note that revenge and counter-revenge only creates a circle of violence, thereby making everyone else unsafe, especially innocent people.
“What is required is for the local authorities to radically improve their intelligence capabilities so that security agencies will be alerted in a timely manner to enable them forestall any planned attack."
