We won’t tolerate disrespect from Buhari’s appointees again - Senate President, Ahmad Lawan

We won?t tolerate disrespect from Buhari?s appointees again - Senate President, Ahmad Lawan

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has issued a warning to President Buhari's appointees following the continous face-off that has been recorded between the executive cabinet members and the legislature in the last few weeks.

Addressing State House reporters on Monday August 31 after Buhari inaugurated the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo-led Executive/Legislative/Party Consultative Committee, Lawan disclosed that the President has addressed the issues.

He said;

"I believe that should be the end of it (appointees knocking heads with legislature). We believe that we should work together.

“Mr President made it very clear that he is not going to tolerate any of his appointees doing things that are not respectable, things that have no dignity to the National Assembly.

“For us in the National Assembly, I think what has happened has happened. We pray nobody goes to the National Assembly to do the kind of things that disrespect the President and of course abuse the National Assembly.

“We are not going to tolerate that because anyone who wants to see Nigeria progress will continue to ensure that this consultative forum produces the kind of result and outcomes that will make Nigeria better in terms of governance.”

The Senate President who noted that the legislature would always perform its oversight function and check possible excesses of the executive, added that it is incumbent upon APC leaders at all levels and as a party to ensure they met expectations and aspirations of Nigerians by fulfilling the promise made to them during the electioneering campaigns.

Lawan said;

“But we also believe that separation of powers also means there should be cooperation, consultation, coordination and partnership for the benefits of the people of this country. This is not in any way to compromise the different functions we’re tasked and scheduled to discharge."

Coronavirus cases is dropping due to low testing - PTF

Coronavirus cases is dropping due to low testing - PTF

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has disclosed that the low Coronavirus cases recorded across the country is due to the decline in testing by states.

This was disclosed on Monday August 31, by the Head of Disease Surveillance for the NCDC, Elsie Ilori, who noted that the low testing is due to low sample collection. He added that States like Kano, Lagos, Oyo, Edo, and FCT, had the biggest decrease in the number of samples collected in August.

She said;

 “In the month of August, we had very low number of samples collected.

“In July, there were seven states with decreased samples collected, but unfortunately, in August, it increased to 32 states with decreased samples collection. In July, we had 13 states that actually collected over 1,000 samples. For August, no state met that target. That means we had zero states collecting over 1,000 samples.

“For the local government areas, in July we had 515 that collected samples and it decreased to 478 in August. We can appreciate the decrease in August.

“In August, states with the biggest increase are Abia (682), Sokoto (331), Bayelsa (314), Zamfara (55) and Yobe (12), but the numbers are not significant at all.

“In the same month, the biggest decrease in sample collection are Kano (19,108), Lagos (13,146), Oyo (4,902), Edo (3,327), and FCT (3,322). August sample collection has decreased drastically.

“Concerning where samples are being collected, in July, in Benue, Ebonyi, FCT, Lagos, Plateau, all the LGA in these states had samples collected, while only in Delta, Edo and Ogun, only one local government area did not collect samples.

“Concerning local government areas that did not collect samples, in July, Kogi had 19 out of 20 local government areas without samples collected. Also in August, no local government in Kogi collected samples. In Katsina, only 24 local government areas collected samples – Jigawa (22), Kano (20), Taraba (16).

“Even though in Lagos all the local government areas are collecting samples, the number of samples collected was quite low. So, that brought down the number of samples collected for August.”

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire on his own part said;

“Our target is to test two million Nigerians for COVID-19 and to scale up to four million persons of which we have achieved barely a quarter .

“In the past 24 hours, we recorded just 138 COVID-19 positive cases in Nigeria, one of the lowest numbers in many months, giving a total of 53,865 positive cases out of 403,347 tests conducted as of August 31, 2020.

“In the same 24-hour period, 199 persons were discharged from hospitals, giving us total successful treatment of 41,513 patients. We are beginning to see a situation where the number of those treated and discharged exceeds the number of positive cases detected. While these figures may seem reassuring, they may be deceptive, and we cannot assume that the curve is flattening, since we are yet to perfect due diligence on our side.

“With a total of 1,013 deaths recorded so far, the fatality rate has also dropped slightly to 1.88 percent, the gradual fall is possibly an indication of improvement in response and treatment strategies to contain COVID-19 and also a common global trend. As long as we still record deaths from this disease, there is no room for complacency until we meet our goal to reduce fatality rate to less than one per cent."

CBN slashes minimum interest rates on savings deposit to 1.25%

CBN slashes minimum interest rates on savings deposit to 1.25%

In a bid to stimulate the economy, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has slashed the interest rate payable on monies deposited in savings accounts from the previous benchmark of around 3.75 per annum to around 1.25% per annum

According to a circular issued to all banks, the rate cut is effective from today September 1, 2020.

Analysts say the move will allow smaller banks to grow faster and also make it easier for banks to cut lending rates to borrowers.

Africa’s GDP could lose $173.1 billion in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – African Development Bank predicts

Africa?s GDP could lose $173.1 billion in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic ? African Development Bank predicts

The African Development Bank (AfDB), has predicted that Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could lose about $173.1 billion by the end of 2020, and $236.7 billion in 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the continent’s economy.

The bank gave the prediction at its 55th yearly meetings, and 46th meetings of the Board of Governors of the African Development Fund (ADF), that held virtually recently.

According to the bank, the restrictions and strict lockdown the different governments in the continent imposed at the beginning of the pandemic, resulted in mass closures of businesses and millions of job losses.

Speaking at the virtual meeting, re-elected president of the bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said with the pandemic, Africa has lost over a decade of gains of economic growth. He said the bank is working towards helping to soften the impact of the anticipated recession on the continent.  He projected that Africa’s recovery from the economic impact of the pandemic would be long and difficult.

He noted that it had become vital for member countries to unite in helping the continent to build back, boldly, but smartly, paying greater attention to quality growth in health, climate, and the environment.

Adesina said as the first president of the Bank to be re-elected by a vote, it showed the transparency of the Bank and its high level of standards and commitment to transparency and good corporate governance.

He lauded the Bank’s Board of Governors for their collective trust, confidence, and support, noting that he was greatly honored and humbled, as it was yet another call for selfless service to Africa and the AfDB.
