I survived COVID-19 but our people do not believe it’s real - Governor Bala Mohammed

Governor Bala Mohammed has revealed that residents of Bauchi state do not believe Coronavirus is real even after he survived the disease. 

 

Speaking during an NTA programme on Monday May 11, Governor Bala stated that denial, intransigence and adamancy constitute a better part of the problem in the state. 

He said; 

“Part of the problem we have in the state is that of denial, intransigence and adamancy because people don’t believe that this disease is real. 

“And I told them, maybe as a way of godly intervention, I was the index case in the state. COVID-19 is not a respecter of personality and I have been able to come out.

“Therefore, people should take this disease very seriously. We have locked down our mosques and churches and people still want to go for Friday prayers and what have you. And they are going to the market but don’t want to wear masks.”

On use of Chloroquine in treatment of Coronavirus he said; 

“I didn’t recommend the use of chloroquine. I am not a medical doctor, or a stupid man to start diagnosing something or prescribing medicine that I don’t have capacity to do.”

248 new cases of Coronavirus recorded in Nigeria - 81 cases in Lagos state

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced that a total of 248 new cases of Coronavirus has been confirmed in different states in the country. 

A breakdown of the new cases across states in the country is as follows; 81-Lagos, 35-Jigawa, 26-Borno, 26-Kano, 20-Bauchi, 13-FCT, 12-Edo, 10-Sokoto, 7-Zamfara, 4-Kwara, 4-Kebbi, 2-Gombe, 2-Taraba, 2-Ogun, 2-Ekiti, 1-Osun, 1-Bayelsa. 

The NCDC also rectified an error it made in its announcement on Saturday May 9. According to the health agency, FCT recorded 13 discharged cases and 2 deaths on May 9, 2020 and not 32 discharge cases as earlier announced. 

As at Sunday May 10, Nigeria has a total of 4399 cases of Coronavirus. 778 patients have been discharged and 143 have been recorded. 

Madagascar’s herbal cure for COVID-19 sent to Nigeria

Nigeria is set to receive Republic of Madagascar's herbal drug 'COVID Organics (COV)', which the country's leaders said cures and prevents Coronavirus.

The Nation reported that Nigeria’s consignment has been sent to Equatorial Guinea from where it will be airlifted to Abuja. It was gathered that African countries were divided into zones for ease of transportation, leading to freighting of Nigeria’s consignments to Equatorial Guinea.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has been notified of the offer from Madagascar and arrangements are being made to bring Nigeria’s allocation to Abuja.

While some health officials are pushing for clinical trial of Covid Organics before being used in the country, there is reportedly pressure on the Federal Government by different medical and scientific organizations to allow the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) subject the drug to further analysis.

El-rufai Gives Update On Two COVID-19 Patients Who Fled After Testing Positive

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir EL-Rufai has said that the two coronavirus patients, who fled their homes in Kaduna State shortly after they were notified of their test results, have been apprehended by security operatives.

We had reported that the Kaduna State Government appealed to persons who tested positive for coronavirus to report at its isolation centre for treatment.

The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Mohammed-Baloni who made the appeal on Sunday said the call was necessary as two people had absconded prior to receiving their test result which came back positive.

Confirming the development, El-Rufai in a tweet via his Twitter account said they have been tracked and were now at an isolation centre in the State.

He said“ 

Security agencies have successfully tracked the two COVID-19 positive persons who fled their homes shortly after they were notified of their test results.

• “Commissioner of Health Dr Amina Mohammed-Baloni has confirmed that both of them are now at the isolation centre.”

Deaths In Azare Town Was Caused By Seasonal Heatwave And Not Coronavirus – Bauchi Government

The Bauchi State Government on Sunday, May 10, countered claims of Coronavirus being the cause of the increased number of deaths recorded in Azare town.

Bauchi state deputy governor, Senator Baba Tela told journalists that deaths recorded in Azare area of the state was caused by the seasonal heatwave and not Coronavirus.

Tela who is also the Chairman of the state task force on COVID-19 told members of the public not to believe social media reports of 300 people dying in one week in the town as it is not true.

He said;

“On the issue of deaths that have been happening in Azare, we got different reports. Some people said five deaths have been recorded, others said 300 people died in the last two to three days.

“I personally went and spoke to people who work at mortuary and bury people. I discovered that yes, there have been a number of deaths.

This death is seasonal. It happens like that sometimes when it is very hot or cold. The same thing happened in Kano and Jigawa. We are all around the same axis.

“But I can tell you and I am very sure, the number of deaths is nowhere near what people are saying.”

Federal Government directs NAFDAC to assess herbal mixture as possible COVID-19 treatment

The federal government has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) to carry out tests on plant-based cough mixtures, as possible treatment for Coronavirus.

 

In a memo titled ‘Formulation of a Phyto-Medicine-Based Cough Mixture/Syrup for the Management of COVID-19 Patients by Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine Department of the Ministry’ and addressed to the director-general of NAFDAC Mojisola Adeyeye, the permanent secretary in the ministry of health, Mashi Abdullahi said the directive became necessary following a search for cure to Coronavirus.



The memo reads in full;



“As you are aware, the COVID-19 pandemic is currently ravaging the world with no definite treatment or vaccine.

“This has necessitated countries to look for solutions from within and Nigeria is no exception. It is worthy to note that Nigeria is blessed with medicinal plants which could be exploited.

“It is heartwarming to note that the Department of TCAM has taken the pains to research into scientific materials to come up with a formulation intended for the management of cough in COVID-19 and other cough-related infections.

“The formulation is a Cov-herbal cough mixture. Interestingly, all the ingredients that make up the formulations are medicinal plants that are widely used as food materials and medicines.

“They include Allium sativa (garlic); Allium cepa (onions); Zingiber officinale (ginger): Piper guineense (West African Black Pepper); and Adansonia digitata (baobab fruit). The innovation here is the composition of the formulation.

“These medicinal plants have documented scientific evidence of long use for the management of cough and other respiratory infections, with medicinal properties of mucoIytic, antitussive, expectorant, soothing, demulcent, anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects.

“The ministry is determined to walk the talk in the promotion and integration of herbal medicine into the health care delivery system.

“In view of the foregoing and the desire of the ministry to showcase to the public a product that is 100 per cent sourced locally, you are requested to carry out the necessary procedures for listing.

“The ministry will contract the packaging of the product to some identified pharmaceutical companies. Find attached scientific pieces of evidence of the products end labelling for your information end necessary action."
